Somali marriage in Germany
In Germany a marriage can only be contracted before a registrar at the Standesamt. A religious ceremony is optional and carries no legal weight of its own. A nikah in a German mosque is a religious act between the couple and their community; the marriage the state recognises is the one performed at the Standesamt.
How to be legally married in Germany
- 1Book an appointment at the Standesamt for the district where one of you is registered.
- 2Ask the Standesamt which documents they need. The list differs by nationality, so ask them directly rather than relying on a general one.
- 3Hold the nikah separately, before or after. It does not replace the Standesamt ceremony.
