Somali marriage in Norway

In Norway a nikah can be the legal marriage itself, provided the person conducting it holds an official licence to marry. Imams from registered religious communities can hold that licence. If the person conducting the ceremony does not hold one, the couple is not legally married however the ceremony was performed -- so the single question to ask before booking anything is whether this imam is licensed.

How to be legally married in Norway

  1. 1Ask the imam directly whether he holds vigselrett, and which registered community he holds it through.
  2. 2Apply for the certificate confirming there is no impediment to the marriage. It must be in place before the ceremony.
  3. 3If the imam is not licensed, book a civil ceremony as well -- the religious ceremony alone will not be recognised.
