- →Your profile is your first impression. Make it personal and specific.
- →At least 3 sentences in 'About me', mention concrete interests
- →Avoid the generic: 'I am kind' says nothing. Show it instead.
- →The wali and family read the profile too. Be honest about your deen.
Profile A: "I am kind and looking for a good person." Profile B: "Somali brother, 28, engineer. Pray fajr every day. Looking for a sister with strong aqeedah in the Minneapolis area." Which one would YOU have clicked on?
Your profile is your first impression. The difference between a profile that receives interest requests and one that gets ignored is often just how it is written. It does not matter how wonderful you are as a person if your profile does not communicate it.
A good profile is not about being perfect. It is about being clear, honest, and personal. In this guide we share everything we have learned about what makes a profile strong on Somali Marriage. You get concrete tips, real examples, and a checklist.
The 5 most common mistakes
These five mistakes come up again and again. They cost you matches.
1. "I live in London. Sunni." Too short, says nothing. This is the most common mistake we see. You have given two facts, but zero personality. Whoever reads your profile knows nothing about who you are, what you enjoy, or why they should be interested. A profile should give a sense of who you are, not just a two-line CV.
2. "Ask me." Lazy and uninteresting. If you cannot be bothered to write about yourself, why should anyone be bothered to contact you? "Ask me" signals a lack of engagement. The most successful profiles on Somali Marriage are the ones that tell you something, even if it is only three sentences.
3. A negative tone. "I do NOT want..." instead of "I am looking for..." Many profiles begin with what the person does not want. "I do NOT want someone who does not pray", "I do NOT want drama". The problem? You come across as negative from the very start. Flip it: write what you are looking for instead. "I am looking for a practising Muslim who prioritises their deen" reads completely differently.
4. Copied text. Generic phrases that everyone writes. "I am a simple person looking for a good Muslim." This is in every other profile. It says nothing unique about you. Write something specific instead: what makes YOU you? What makes YOUR ideal partner unique?
5. An empty "Looking for in a partner". If you do not know what you want, why should anyone contact you? This field is left empty surprisingly often. But it is one of the most important fields in your profile. If you cannot describe what you are looking for, how are we meant to match you with the right person? Take five minutes and write at least three qualities you value.
How to write a good "About me"
"About me" is the first field people read, and often the only one before they decide to scroll on or send a request. Here is the key: describe personality, not just facts.
Three to five sentences is enough, but they should paint a picture of who you are. Mention what you do in life, what you enjoy, and what drives you forward. Show a little personality.
Good example (sister): "Assalamu alaikum! I am a 25-year-old nursing student in Toronto of Somali heritage. I love reading, cooking, and long walks by the water. My deen is the most important thing in my life and I am looking for someone who shares that priority. I am calm but have a lot of humour — those who know me know I am always laughing."
This works because it paints a picture. You see a person in front of you, not just facts.
Good example (brother): "Salam! I am a 28-year-old engineer in Minneapolis. I reverted to Islam 3 years ago and it changed my life completely. In my free time I train, read Islamic history, and explore new places to eat. I am looking for a life companion who wants to build a home grounded in deen and mutual respect."
Also good. Specific, personal, and shows direction in life.

Bad example: "I live in London. Sunni."
Why is this bad? You give no reason for anyone to be interested. No personality, no interests, no sense of who you are.
"What are you looking for in a partner?" Be specific
"A good Muslim" — that is the answer everyone gives. But what makes YOUR ideal partner unique? What do you truly value?
Good example: "Practising, good sense of humour, family-oriented. Ideally from the same city so we can build a life together without long distances."
Good example: "Someone who prays the five prayers, has ambitions and goals, and enjoys travelling. I want a partner who challenges me to become better, both in deen and as a person."
Bad example: "A good person."
It says nothing. Everyone wants a good person. Be specific about which qualities matter to you in particular. Mention at least three things: they can be deen-related, personality traits, or lifestyle preferences.
The deen questions, what do they mean?
The Somali Marriage form has several questions about your religious orientation and practice. Here is what they mean and why they matter.
Orientation (Salafi, Sunni, Ahlul Hadith, Just Muslim): This is about which Islamic methodology you follow. Salafi means you follow the understanding of the earliest generations of Islam. Sunni is the broader term for the vast majority of Muslims. Ahlul Hadith focuses strongly on authentic hadith. "Just Muslim" means you do not identify with a specific orientation. There is no right or wrong, but it is important that your partner understands where you stand.
Prayer (Always, Almost always, Sometimes): Be honest. "Almost always" is better than lying about "always". Honesty in your profile leads to better matches, and it is the Islamically correct thing to do. A person who prays "almost always" and is honest about it is more attractive than someone who lies.

Scholars you take knowledge from: Which scholars inspire you? Sheikh al-Albani, Ibn Uthaymeen, Ibn Baz? It says a lot about your religious understanding and orientation. Fill in this field. It helps us match you with someone who has a similar understanding.
Islamic practice: How do you live your deen day to day? Do you go to the masjid? Do you read Quran daily? Do you fast outside Ramadan? Do you wear hijab/niqab? Do you keep a beard? This field is about showing how Islam appears in your daily life, not just in theory.
Tips for brothers
Show ambition. Sisters and their families want to see that you have a direction in life. It does not have to be an advanced career, but show that you have goals and that you are working towards them. "I am training to be an electrician and plan to start my own business within 5 years" is stronger than leaving the field empty.
Mention your deen concretely. "I am practising" is not enough. What does that mean for you? Do you pray at the masjid? Do you read Quran in the morning? Do you fast on Mondays? The more specific you are, the better.
Keep a respectful tone. Remember that you are writing to a sister and her wali. Your profile should radiate maturity and respect. Avoid slang, abbreviations, and an overly casual tone.
Short and clear beats long and messy. A focused profile of 5-7 sentences beats a long, unstructured text every time. Quality over quantity.
Tips for sisters
Be confident in your tone. You do not need to be shy or apologetic in your profile. You have the right to know what you want and to express it clearly. A confident profile is an attractive profile.
Say what you are looking for. Be specific with your preferences. It saves time for everyone involved: you, the potential partner, and the wali. "I am looking for a practising brother with education and ambition, ideally living in the Toronto area" is clear and good.
Mention your interests. It makes you human and relatable. Do you read? Do you cook? Are you studying something? Do you travel? Interests help a potential partner see whether you have common ground.
Wali information matters. Filling in your wali information shows that you take the process seriously and follow the Islamic method. It also gives reassurance to the brother considering sending a request. He knows the family is involved.
Checklist, is your profile 10/10?
Go through this checklist before you publish your profile. If you can tick every point, you have a profile that stands out.
- "About me" has at least 3 sentences that describe your personality
- You mention at least 2 interests or hobbies
- "Looking for in a partner" has at least 3 specific qualities
- The tone is positive. You write what you are looking for, not what you do not want
- You are honest about your level of deen, no exaggeration
- Work or education is filled in with detail
- Goals in life are filled in. What do you want to achieve?
- The profile text has no spelling mistakes or abbreviations
- You have chosen the right orientation and prayer frequency
A profile that meets all of these points will receive significantly more interest requests than a half-hearted one. Take 15 minutes and do it properly. It is an investment in your future.

Words of wisdom: Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen (rahimahullah) said: "Whoever seeks a righteous spouse is in truth seeking to strengthen their deen." May Allah make it easy for all who search.
From the Seerah
The Prophet ﷺ was described honestly
When the Prophet ﷺ proposed to Khadijah (radiyallahu anha) through his uncle Abu Talib, Abu Talib described him honestly: his character, his deen, his background. No exaggeration, no understatement. Khadijah made an informed decision based on the truth. Your profile should do the same.
Ibn Hisham, as-Seerah an-Nabawiyyah
